Is Apple undermining First Amendment protection for bloggers-as-journalists?
UPDATED: March 12, 2005 Apple Computer's zeal to protect corporate trade secrets has led it seek subpoenas in a California state court seeking testimony or documents from three "blog" sites. Are bloggers entitled to the same First Amendment protection as journalists? Who defines "legitimate media"?

The Media Giraffe Project's mission is to foster participatory democracy and strong communities through independent-minded media. It does so by finding and spotlighting individuals taking personal or professional risk to make innovative, sustainable use of media (old and new). Their use is aimed at advancing opening, honest, accountable and effective government and society.

A digest of articles and comments on the Knight Foundation study of students' perceptions of the media. University of Connecticut researchers did the work. The overall conclusion: Teen-agers lack basic understanding of First Amendment and free press principles and values -- because they aren't being taught them.
